ABC viewers learn why to keep better-for-you palm oil in their pantries

Media Buzz: ABC television viewers learned why Malaysian certified sustainable palm fruit oil is a better-for-you fat when registered dietitian nutritionist Felicia Stoler. Stoler shared her tips for “spring cleaning” your diet on lifestyle show Talk of Alabama.

“I really love this Malaysian certified sustainable palm fruit oil,” Stoler said during the interview. She pointed out red palm oil’s bright orange color. This comes from beta-carotene, which the body converts to vitamin A, a contributor to healthy skin, mucus membranes, immune system, and eye health and vision. It also contains tocotrienols, powerful antioxidants that are nerve and cardio protective, as well as fatty acids, which are the building blocks for cell membranes.

Malaysian certified sustainable palm oil is not only good for your body, it’s also good for the planet. It is non-GMO and organic. Malaysian palm oil producers work to actively reduce the industry’s environmental impact. An oil palm plantation is similar to a tropical rainforest as it helps absorb greenhouse gases. Measures are taken to prevent soil degradation and conserve soil fertility, including contour terracing of the land and the planting of nitrogen-fixing cover crops. Compared to other major vegetable crops such as soy or canola, oil palm cultivation and processing requires less use of fertilizers, pesticides and fuel.

You may already be getting Malaysian certified sustainable palm fruit oil in your diet. It’s an ingredient in many popular products, including the Smart Balance line of peanut butters and spreads, some ramen noodles and microwavable popcorn. “It’s been used to replace trans-fats,” states Stoler. “People were afraid (of) palm oil but when you do see it on a package like in the microwave popcorn, it is a better-for-you fat to be [eating].”
