Watch out for these everyday foods which may contain trans fats

Experts now agree that no amount of trans fats is considered safe. Unfortunately, these manufactured fats are still in our food supply. Even worse, foods which are labeled “zero trans fats” may actually contain a small amount of this unhealthy ingredient. I am thrilled that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is taking action to remove these unhealthy fats from our food supply. But until its new ruling takes effect in June 2018, health-conscious grocery shoppers need to read labels. I’ve prepared a list of everyday foods which may contain trans fats. And because you may not want to go without these family-friendly foods, I’ve included suggestions on choosing varieties which are better for your and our planet.

Breakfast cereals: If you see the words “partially hydrogenated” on the label, put it back on the shelf. Partially hydrogenated oils are the primary source of trans fats. Some food flavorings and colorings also contain partially hydrogenated oils. The most healthful cereals contain whole grains and no artificial flavors and colors.

Microwave popcorn: Popcorn is a great source of dietary fiber, but many brands still contain trans fats. The better option is to make your own popcorn using a heavy-bottom pot, organic popping corn and Malaysian sustainable palm oil.

Peanut butter: This one is really important because you don’t want to expose your kids to trans fats. Choose a peanut butter that contains palm oil. This better-for-you oil is naturally trans fat-free, non-GMO and contains vitamin E tocotrienols which supports brain and heart health.

Frozen potatoes: You might think that these are just pre-cut potatoes and that they are relatively healthy if you bake instead of fry them. But many contain added fat, salt and other ingredients. A better option is to buy fresh potatoes. After parboiling them, you can oven roast them with Malaysian palm oil and herbs for a savory dish that’s better for you and Mother Earth. The origin of palm oil makes a difference. The Malaysian palm oil industry provides the world with a responsibly sourced food supply. They actively protect their environment and wildlife habitats, which makes palm oil a good move for all of us.
