Interest in sustainable food just keeps growing as more consumers opt for healthy food that is also good for the planet. Appearing on the CBS morning program Good Day Sacramento , Chef Gerard Viverito taught Northern California viewers about the benefits of having Malaysian certified sustainable palm oil in our food supply.

The Director of Education for non-profit Passionfish, Chef Gerard touted the sustainability of Malaysian palm oil, “I’ve traveled all over the world cooking. One country I’ve spent a lot of time in was Malaysia. I found this oil and now I’ve found it online. It’s Malaysian certified sustainable palm oil … Make sure it’s sustainable because so many countries ravage the planet. Malaysia has actually dedicated 50 percent of their land to conservation. To put that in perspective, America only does four percent. The number one oil Americans reach for is canola. [Malaysian certified sustainable palm oil] requires one tenth the amount of land as the canola plant, the plants last for 30 years, so you’re not constantly digging up the land and ripping out all the nutrients.”

In addition to being certified sustainable, Malaysian palm oil has nutritional advantages over other edible oils. It is naturally free of trans fats and non-GMO. It is also rich in tocotrienols, powerful forms of vitamin E known for their heart, brain and liver health benefits.

You’re probably already getting some Malaysian certified sustainable palm oil in your diet as it is widely used in many prepared foods, such as microwave popcorn and the Smart Balance line of spreads. Cooking with palm oil is a smart way to add even more of the benefits to your diet.
