MEDIA BUZZ: Newspapers and magazines around the country are helping parents breathe easier this Halloween. Publications from The Morning Sun to the Urban Agenda Magazine are letting parents know that their kids’ Halloween candy may not be as bad as they’ve heard. News outlets are reporting that many American food manufacturers are using non-GMO, naturally trans fat-free and environmentally friendly Malaysian certified sustainable palm oil in their treats. So, worried parents can put to rest their fears of wildlife-endangering, faux fat-filled Halloween candy.

In an article the Princeton Magazine, which was also repeated in The Macomb Daily, The Oakland Press and The Daily Tribune, registered dietitian nutritionist Felicia Stoler explained that parents do still need to be concerned about sugar intake. “Between school parties, trick-or-treating and overly generous grandparents, many kids end up with an enormous amount of candy,” she wrote. “Let them indulge for a day or two, but don’t allow this habit to continue. The constant onslaught of high-sugar treats is bad news for kids’ teeth and their overall health.”

Earlier fears about rainforest-harming ingredients in Halloween candy are no longer an issue. “Many American food manufacturers now use environmentally friendly ingredients in their recipes, such as certified sustainable palm oil from Malaysia, a world leader in responsible, sustainable, non-GMO palm oil production. Malaysia’s strict laws prohibit any practices that harm native wildlife or the environment.”

Malaysian certified sustainable palm oil is also naturally trans fat-free, which is great news for parents looking for more natural options for their kids.
