Minneapolis TV viewers recently learned why a leading expert on preventive cardiology, Joseph Keenan, MD, likes the idea of cooking with Malaysian palm fruit oil. A sixth of Americans suffer from high cholesterol, putting them at an increased risk of heart attack and stroke. While many people assume they should avoid all fats, Keenan appeared on KMSP-TV Channel 9 to explain the importance of instead eating the right fats. He discouraged people from eating trans fat, which he called “the only bad fat.” Healthier alternatives are olive oil for salads, and heart-healthy Malaysian red palm fruit oil, which is safe to use for grilling and cooking thanks to its high smoke point. It also has one of the highest antioxidant levels of any cooking oil. Malaysian red palm fruit oil is available at Whole Foods and many specialty or ethnic food markets.
