What’s better than indulging in a favorite sweet treat? Indulging in a healthier-for-you version that tastes just as great (or even better)! On her popular food blog Swadkrang, Meenu Singh shares this palm oil cookie recipe, calling them “mouth-watering and melt-in-the-mouth cookies filled with the special flavor of palm oil.” Singh says kids especially love these cookies — and adults will feel good knowing they’re made with wheat flour and vitamin-rich palm oil.
“The finest cookie flavors all are made with palm oil,” writes Singh. She shares the history of this favorite dessert (did you know the word “cookie” comes from the Dutch word “koekje”?), and she explains that palm oil is the key to making perfect dough — with or without eggs.
Malaysian certified sustainable palm oil is a great replacement for the partially hydrogenated vegetable oils you may be trying to avoid. It’s non-GMO, cholesterol neutral and free of trans fats. Palm oil is a natural source of carotenoids, which are great for your immune system and skin health, and vitamin E tocotrienols, which support brain, bone and liver health.
Palm oil provides the ideal texture and volume for baked goods. Plus, it doesn’t break down at high heat, so it’s helpful to keep a bottle on hand for your baking and frying needs.
Find Malaysian certified sustainable palm oil at specialty food stores, and try this recipe or one of the other palm oil treats Singh shares on her blog. But beware: They’re so good, Singh says they may be addicting. Even though they’re healthier, you still don’t want to overdo it!
