MEDIA BUZZ: When the Pittsburgh Better Times asked me to write about my top superfoods for 2017, I chose five that are easy to find. Instead of expounding on the latest, greatest food found in the far reaches of the earth, I focused on nutrient-dense foods, including Malaysian certified sustainable palm oil, that are sitting right under our noses. Yet we pay them little attention. In addition to palm oil, these also included garbanzo beans, fermented vegetables, raspberries and spinach.
These foods are nutritional superstars. Garbanzo beans pack 12 grams of fiber and 15 grams of protein per half cup. Fermented vegetables are the best sources of gut-healthy probiotics on the planet. Raspberries are the poster children for low-carb fruit (8 of its 15 grams of carbs are actually fiber) and are a great source of ellagic acid, which is a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. Fiber-rich spinach packs a ton of potassium, some vitamin K and many other minerals, including manganese, magnesium and iron.
One of the most exciting inclusions on my superfoods list is palm oil. Now that the research is finally clear on the fact that saturated fats do not cause heart disease, I’d love for more people to use Malaysian palm oil this year. This wonderful, natural, plant-based saturated fat is a rich red oil brimming with vitamin E tocotrienols, alpha carotene, beta carotene and other carotenoids. These nutrients are being studied for their many health benefits, including their ability to support eye, bone, joint, brain, heart, and liver health. With these superpowered palm oil nutrients, it was a no-brainer to include Malaysian palm oil in my superfoods list!
I always make sure to specifically mention palm oil that’s produced in Malaysia in my articles and TV interviews because I care about animals and the environment. Malaysia produces palm oil sustainably, and doesn’t harm the environment or animal habitats during cultivation. It protects its forests. (As an animal lover, this is important to me, so that’s why I bring it up whenever I can.)
Media outlets such as the Pittsburgh Better Times help the public learn the truth about fats. And any time I can help them, I jump at the opportunity. Malaysian sustainable palm oil is already an ingredient in many foods on grocery store shelves. You can also find the Malaysian palm cooking oil in international markets as well as several supermarket chains.
