When something is as widely used as palm oil, you want to make sure it’s sustainably produced! And palm oil is everywhere! It’s found in everything from chocolate and ice cream to bread and microwave popcorn. Here are 10 reasons why most of the palm oil used in the United States is sourced from Malaysia and nowhere else.
Malaysia is the world’s second-largest palm oil producer, and supplies its oil to companies worldwide. “About 90 percent of the palm oil that is used in the United States actually is sourced from Malaysia and nowhere else,” said Sundram, “because the American industry appreciates the quality, and the rigor of concerns and environmental practices that we operate throughout the industry.”

Palm oil comes from the fruit of the oil palm tree which grows in lush plantations near the equator. Malaysian sustainable palm oil is preferred by many American companies because the Malaysian palm oil industry follows environmentally friendly agricultural policies.
Pharmacist turned holistic food and healthy living expert Lisa Leslie-Williams recently introduced her readers to the functional cooking concept. “That simply means improving the nutrition of recipes without changing the taste or time it takes to prepare them,” she wrote in her blog, The Domestic Life Stylist. She encouraged her readers to start cooking with Malaysian certified sustainable palm oil. “Studies have shown it to be heart-healthy, even though it’s 50% saturated fats. After doing my own research, I’m using Malaysian certified sustainable palm oil because of that country’s strong environmental commitment.”
This may be the first time that healthy cooking oil appears on many people’s New Year’s resolution lists. Here are a few health reasons for stocking up.
