Oil plantations are incredibly productive. A single acre of oil palm produces 11 times more oil than a single acre of soybean plants, and 7 times more oil than an acre of canola (rapeseed) plants.
I tend to favor Malaysian palm oil over others because of its sustainability. I care about the animals. Malaysia conserves more than 50 percent of its rainforests. The country is animal friendly and protective. No orangutans are hurt there, and that matters.
Registered dietitian nutritionist Felicia Stoler told SiriusXM Radio listeners to include healthy fats in their diet, and explained why she uses Malaysian certified sustainable palm oil.
Palm oil is now available with independent certification demonstrating that it has been produced in a sustainable manner without damage to the environment. This addresses the concerns that some consumers have regarding forest conversion and greenhouse gas emissions.
In 2006, when the FDA required food manufacturers to list the amount of trans fats on nutrition labels, they also allowed manufacturers to label a food as trans fat-free if an individual serving contained less than 0.5 grams of trans fats. That means you may be unknowingly consuming trans fats.
“Malaysian sustainable palm oil is already found in a lot of foods. I think people just don’t know enough about it. It’s a nutrient rich, GMO-free food. Making that a part of your diet is really important for overall health and well-being.”
