The Malaysian Palm Oil Council has come out against the EU’s proposed unilateral Action Plan against deforestation, charging that is impractical to implement unilateral global initiatives to improve trade in sustainable goods.
This “golden crop” contributes significantly to Malaysia’s economy. It has been credited with reducing poverty and contributing to Malaysia’s environment.
“The benefits of the MSPO are of great interest to many of our partners in Europe. It will require a concerted international effort to achieve recognition, but the palm oil industry will gain from this.,” said Keong.

Palm oil cultivation is smart land use. A single acre of oil palm produces 11 times more oil than soybeans, and 10 times more than sunflower.
Awareness of Malaysian certified sustainable palm oil is growing in part due to consumers’ growing interest in non-GMO and sustainably produced foods.
